Quality Analysis of Weld-Line Defects in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Sheet Moulding Compounds by Automated Eddy Current Scanning

چکیده

Discontinuous fibre reinforced composites enable the manufacture of integrated structural components via complex flow process compression moulding. However, such processes can lead to formation detrimental weld-lines. Here, meso-structure carbon sheet moulding compounds (C-SMC) was analysed using conventional non-destructive techniques and automated eddy current (EC) scanning, as well destructive methods, in an attempt identify defects weld-lines this class materials. Compression-moulded plaques with forced two different configurations (adjacent opposing joints) were analysed, showing up 80% strength reduction versus a defect-free plaque. The EC-determined local orientation elucidated microstructure matched those obtained techniques, dramatic tow alignment parallel It found that failure occurred proximity “non-uniformity” defect regions identified by EC analyses, demonstrating use robot-guided for successful detection C-SMC structures.

Characterization of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composite by Means of Non-Destructive Eddy Current Testing and FEM Modeling

The limitation of non-destructive methods for the inspection of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites is a major problem for many practical applications of the material, especially in the aircraft industry. This paper presents a study which is directed towards non-destructive characterization of CFRP using eddy current methods. The relationship between the signal from different type...

Assessment of the Exit Defects in Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plastic Plates Caused by Drilling

This paper investigates the formation of the exit defects in carbon fibre-reinforced plates and characterizes their features in terms of drilling conditions. It was found that spalling and fuzzing are the major mechanisms of exit defects. The spalling, consisting of a main region and a secondary region, is caused by chisel and cutting edge actions, in which the former plays a key role. The fuzz...

Modelling of Tensile Behaviour of Sheet Moulding Compounds

An original approach to compute the longitudinal tensile break stress of multiphase composite materials with short fibers reinforcement is presented. The most obvious mechanical model which reflects a multiphase composite material is a pre-impregnated material, known as prepreg. We may include in this class of prepregs, Sheet-and Bulk Moulding Compounds. The model is seen as consisting of three...

Image Characterization of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites

A new methodology to detect fibres orientation in composite materials, using image processing tools is introduced. Several examples with manufacturing defects are studied using RIMAPS technique and the Variogram method. The characterization is made from digitized images of the samples. Combined use of RIMAPS and Variogram analyses identified the orientation of fibres and determined the values o...
